The Fine Things are Always Hand Made

Looking up the station call letters, I am thinking this is a Chicago dial.  The top of this dial is ok, the bottom must have gotten wet sometime in it's life and is destroyed.  It looks like Radio Daze does not reproduce Chicago dials.  I might have to convert this to a non-station call dial unless someone has a good dial from a parts set that they are willing to sell me.  This is from a 9 out of 10 chrome Philharmonic that I picked up a few months ago.

Scott - Yes - is the Chicago dial and is the variation Radio Daze does carry.

The problem with the standard dial is the proportions are different for the upper dial 3 bands -  so the spacing is expanded, to mirror the 3 bands on the lower half of the dial. Your 4 moving dial lamps behind the upper dial would not align with the upper 3 bands of the standard dial.  Your top most dial lamp shines only through those little circles above the station call letters. Different dials have different disks (masks)  behind the green backer and  a somewhat different positioning to the lamp holders.

To convert to the standard dial, you would need the entire dial assembly for the standard dial to get the proper disk behind the green plastic backer and lamp brackets.

When I have my pointer Philly out of the cabinet next, I will offer an image to John Slusser (Radio Daze) - probably soon to deal with a couple issues.

Or better yet, remove yours and offer the dial (or a good photo) to Radio Daze as an image source for the top half. The bottom half of all the pointer versions are identical.

That is a good idea Dave.  I will offer the dial to John and see if he is willing to make it.

I do have a parts dial assembly for a standard dial if worse comes to worse, but I like this Chicago dial and would prefer to keep it.

John at Radio Daze has agreed to make the Chicago version of this dial.  I need to send him my dial and hopefully I will have a new one in about 10 weeks as he is backlogged.

Great!! - may just order one for backup.,

My dial is pretty good. But sometimes the screen printing starts to deteriorate after enough time or significant exposure to stronger light - by flaking off or changing from white to a beige.

I may get one just to save...I think the Chicago dial is just so very Scott...thanks Scott!

Ok.  Radiodaze has reproduced my central call station dial.  It is available on their website.

The new one matches up pretty good.  The lettering is a light mint green instead of an ivory, so that is a bit of a disappointment.

Here is the dials stacked with the old one on top:

On the white background you can really see the light mint color of the lettering.

Great addition to the RADIO DAZE inventory. Thank you for your effort.

Even my original Chicago pointer dial,  the traveling lamp behind the mask does not quite align with the the call letter circles adjacent anyway. The new repo dial looks good in your stacked photo.

Wonder if the mint green you mention is really due to glass tint, a sort of Cola-Cola bottle green?

NOTE, above about 800 KC, the FCC shifted broadcast stations up 20 KC many decades ago.  So, the call letters on the regional Scott dials are off by 20 KC. For example, Chicago's WCFL was 980 KC in 1937, but has been at 1000 KC for a long time.

I wonder if all the pointer dial variations soon drove Scott Radio nuts.

David, the glass is a high iron glass.  Not the best choice IMHO.

A gold/ivory paint for the lettering would have been better.   The paint they used is pure white.

Take a look at how green the letters show when a light is on the edge, like our dial lights.  It looks like glow in the dark paint, LOL.

I know, with the dark green background it will probably not make a bit of difference, but I like complaining. :-)
