EH Scott Radio Enthusiasts

The Fine Things are Always Hand Made

We have a Scott 16 Acousticraft.  My dad purchased this on Nov. 4, 1937 and we have the letter signed by EH Scott (did they have auto-sign then?) thanking him for the purchase, along with the guarantee and another Scott signed letter giving dad a few tips on how to get "maximum performance."  The radio seems complete and when it is turned on one can hear a hum and static when you turn the dial.  The top has some dark discoloration and the plastic over the face is cracked in one corner (happened in the ‘50s), but otherwise it seems to be okay.  We are downsizing and moving from Milwaukee, WI to Vermont and can not take it with us.  What is the best way to market this radio?  How does one handle shipping if it is necessary?  Thank you for any help.  Sorry for asking this way, but I am overwhelmed with this move and didn't know where else to go for help.  Thank you.

Andrea:

Thanks for posting your note and inquiry.  The EH Scott Radio Laboratories did have a rubber signature stamp that was used for most promotional correspondence.  If you observe a difference in signatures, the letter thanking him for the purchase is more likely an original signature.  You are welcome to offer the radio on this forum.  The value will depend greatly on the condition of the chromium chassis.  If you can post photos of the set (front and back), members here can help with the value of the set.  Shipping of consoles is usually the buyers responsibility although some buyers will ask if you can pack and deliver the set to a shipping terminal.  A number of shipping companies offer door to door service but some require that you wait until their truck is in the area.

Thank you very much, Norman.  I am under a time crunch here, but will try to post as soon as possible.

Andrea -

Fortunately, you are in an area where there are a number of Scott collectors and finding someone who may be interested in coming to pick it up is much more likely. Pictures would be a big help in determining value: condition of the cabinet and chrome on the set are huge factors in the price. The plastic dial cover is not a problem, there are excellent reproductions available. We'll be happy to help you in any way we can.
