The Fine Things are Always Hand Made

Fortunately this one was in very good overall condition. The original Thorens changer works very well. The crystal cartridge that came with this set amazingly sounds wonderful, date coded 1966. I use Victor Tungstone needles that I have a good stash of. This set also came with the Dynamic Noise Suppressor option, stamped "patented by H.H. Scott".

Sounds good, John. The 800B is not a simple radio. You'll find a lot of challenges moving forward. I found quite a few out-of-tolerance resistors on both chassis. I replaced just about all capacitors. RF alignment was really touchy and I went back and re-aligned several times, especially the FM. The Service Manual found on this site is well done and a must for the novice troubleshooter. I have several radios down in my basement awaiting restoration, but it's too darn cold down there right now. It's been a cold winter in the NE.

It's difficult to recommend to someone where to start troubleshooting when there is a problem like that. One wonders if the tuning motor is being asked to run as soon as power is turned on for some reason. The audio is muted when the tuning motor is running.

Thank you for clarifying that, Norman. I took a quick look at the schematic and assumed differently and incorrectly. Tom

The relays next to the tuning motor are for operating the tuning motor.  The early version chassis did not have these relays hence relying on the full motor current passing through the adjustable contacts on the back of the set.  This caused sparking and problems with the motor tuning. The later sets ran a smaller current through the adjustable contacts to energize the relays.

John, one relay is the ON/OFF relay when you depress the ON button, and the other switches between AM and FM. There is complete information, schematics and other literature at this site for all Scott radios. Thanks, John. It was a decent set to start with, so I can't take too much credit.
