I can't find a toggle switch with a long enough stem to fit all the way through the hole. And, I don't want to drill the initial hole deeper and risk disaster.

The radio came out of the wall of an old home in another city. It came with a with a round wall light switch to turn the set on and off.

Does anyone have or know where to find one? The internet has not been helpful so far.

The story has a relevance to E.H. Scott Radio Laboratories because Murray Clay came from RCA as and electrical engineer in their radio licensing division just before this article was written. As many of you know Clay was instrumental in helping Scott develop their High Fidelity receivers based on the advancements RCA was making in that area of High Fidelity transmitters and the design of compatible studio equipment at the time. The story is titled " The Specific Transmitter Performance Required for High Fidelity" by Loren Jones who was head of RCA's transmitter engineering and starts on page 8. https://worldradiohistory.com/ARCHIVE-RCA/RCA-Broadcast-News/RCA-14.pdf
Volume Expandertag:ehscott.ning.com,2023-03-05:3925821:BlogPost:1341682023-03-05T02:16:31.000ZKent Kinghttps://ehscott.ning.com/profile/KentKing

OK folks...question: Here is the schematic of the outboard volume expander for an AW23. I was working on one earlier today and noticed a mod that I had not seen before. If this mod isn't factory, it was done a <long> time ago - near its original production. The mod is simple - a 20ufd/25VDC cap is wired from the 6A7 cathodes to ground (+ side on the cathode). It is soldered right on the wiper of the balance potentiometer. Any thoughts on what this might do? Should I remove it/leave it…

First, the grid lead to the mixer (6A7)...in most sets, the lead comes out through the large tuning cap cover and feeds through a hole in a phenolic piece riveted to the 6B7 shield base. On this set, there is a single terminal tie point riveted on the 6B7 shield and there is a solder joint to continue on to the grid cap:

I re-acquired this wonderful Scott Philly AM/FM BOL in a nice huge 1932 circa 1st year Capehart 300 cabinet. I had sold this radio a few years ago to a big dog private collector over in Davenport Iowa. The history of this set goes back to Norman finding this in a habitat for humanity shop in the Denver area. The shop had asked Norman for an approximate value for them to sell it at. After Norman posted about it here on this forum I ended up buying it and had it shipped via craters and Freighters to me. I hired Bill Liers to go through it and now it's a wonderful powerful player.

Someone did a very nice retrofit of all the Philly components into the cabinet. The 300 series was the upright cabinet version of the more well known 400 series side by side consoles with the turn over record player. On the 300 the RP is in the middle (it's still in there with the motor and shaft and the 15" Scott pedestal speaker and amp are squeezed underneath the RP, no small feat. Ironically the RP is a 2 speed version for both 78 and old 33 RPM. I think these were very rare and later ones were 78 RPM only.

Typical of Capeharts this cabinet is very well made and has beautiful inlays on the insides of the 6 doors and ornate wood scrollwork on the outsides. The top is not hinged like a Scott but thats OK. I had forgotten this Philly still has the VRE built into the chassis. This particular model is serial no BB-443 and has the red TV band on the dial also.
Scott allwave 23 capstag:ehscott.ning.com,2022-02-10:3925821:BlogPost:1218192022-02-10T04:34:59.000ZThomas Dayhttps://ehscott.ning.com/profile/ThomasDay

we hear lots of talk these days about supply chain, but Scott suffered from challenges for many years. Here is a new one for me....I am restoring the AW23 that fellow member Kevin found on the trash pile in Columbus a couple months ago. Got it up here over the weekend and opened it up...

it is 100% Potter capacitors. Now I have probably been inside a couple dozen AW23 sets and every one I've seen has Sprague caps. But these are clearly original, the solder joints are factory. So - for how long did Scott use Potter caps? Sprague have trouble delivering? Has anyone else seen a set with original Potter caps like this?

So, it looks like an AW23 speaker, but it doesn't have the two plugs for the tweeters and the stub cable (and no stub cable). The connector is like that used on the pointer Philharmonic (two large pins not together, not like a 23). Pin testing shows it should work on a Philly - but it is a 12 in and no Philly style tweeter connection either. But tagged Scott...I have two of these BTW...the other one has an AW23 style plug on it and tested it with an AW23 and it works great. Any thoughts…

It isn't an extension speaker either - the connections inside the "Maganavox" door are the same as a 23 speaker. The manuals show a very different terminal strip for the extension speakers.

Hi All,

I recenty scored two Philharmoincs from a Jim Sargant auction. Have been sporadically searching for a Philharmonic for years and was relieved to finally hit pay dirt. In any case, I am looking for cabinets for my new acquisitions. If anyone has a cabinet surplus to their needs (or knows someone who might) I'd certainly welcome a 'heads up'. Hope all have a wonderful New Year!

That cabinet should be the larger Philharmonic size - 19 inch deep. The control face panel can be removed and replaced with one cut for a Philharmonic.
Phantom Power Suppliestag:ehscott.ning.com,2021-11-21:3925821:BlogPost:1208242021-11-21T02:24:28.000ZKent Kinghttps://ehscott.ning.com/profile/KentKing

I discovered something today that I had never noticed before. Background - I am working on an FM Phantom which has the later Jones plug connector. I was double checking my new connector and saw the 6.3v filament line on the amp I was working with (my working set in the Stratford cabinet), had the CT grounded. The Jones plug amp with the FM Phantom was grounded on one side, NOT via the CT. The Phantom Deluxe schematic shows one side of the filament to ground.

I happen to have 5 Phantom Deluxe amps here at the moment, so I spot checked. The Jones plug amp is end ground. Two of the round plug amps are center grounded. The other two round plug amps are end grounded, and the CT lead on the transformer has never been soldered.

This implies that Phantom Deluxe amps are not readily interchangeable between sets. Scott always seemed to make things fairly fool-proof, but this would be a difficult to spot issue. Has anyone else noticed this? How are your Phantom Deluxe amps wired?

When the FM models were introduced in 1940, Scott also began offering a "4 unit" sound system. We've seen tweeter sets with the AW23 and the early Philharmonic sets (both use a Y-cable from the pedestal speaker to two tweeters). The 4-unit systems included a crossover box where you connected the bass speaker and two tweeters, and it also had a jack for an extension speaker. The crossover and 3 speakers constituted the 4-unit system, which sold for $29.50. Later units had a smaller crossover,…

Later units had a smaller crossover, and the smaller one came in two forms, one with a 35Z3 rectifier tube and one without (the tube socket hole usually plugged with a metal cap).

To my knowledge (and anyone who has something, please set me straight!), we have not seen a set with the 4-unit system using the 35Z3 to drive 3 speakers. Most of the crossovers with the rectifier tube are on Laureate sets, driving the coaxial (single) tweeter mounted in the center of the large speaker. In the large purchase I made, I acquired an FM Phantom which has what appears to be an original 4-unit sound system with the FC style tweeters (see attached). Does anyone have anything similar? Any ideas on the manufacturer of the tweeters?

Thanks!
