I just looked at the Craigs list photos. That looks to be the enlarged, deeper Warrington re-sized for housing the larger Philharmonic. And the eye escutcheons are the same style as used for the Pointer Philharmonic. Not the speaker I expected to see, either. Does suggest being contemporary to the mid 1937 Philharmonics. This Warrington sports the tone-truth side grills. My upsized 1937 Tasman/Philly has no tone truth side grills.
I do have a 16 page Scott advertising brochure that includes the AW-23, pointer Philharmonic, Sixteen and the Scott-Autotrope phono changer. This brochure also includes a reprint of the August to October 1937 Radio News review of the new Philharmonic by Cockaday and Taylor with a picture the Philharmonic in a Warrington cabinet with tone truth side grills. And I thought the Scott-Autotrope was a late 1937 offering.
So evidently the AW-23 was available through 1937, so why not at 27 tube variant of the AW-23? Maybe the subject AW-27 was originally fashioned for an employee from still stocked parts. Bruce -

The known AW27 sets are just interspersed within the AW23 numbers, so I cannot analyze an "expected" number of these. I suspect you are right about them being built in conjunction with Philharmonics...we know Scott sold both at the same time in 1937, at least until the Sixteen was introduced. I'm fairly certain that no 23s were built after the Sixteen came along.Looking at know AW23 build dates in my serial number database, I think it is safe to say that no AW27 sets…

However, I am also sure some were built in late 36 and early 37, before the Philly was introduced.

As an example of my pondering about documentation: many Scott sets are found with their manuals and other info (sales letters, etc.). Now that we have 18 of these, wouldn't you think at least one owner's manul would have turned up?

Hi Kent-Is there a rule of thumb on known sets now vs original number made ?

Also, It would seem to me this AW27 was made along side the 30 tube Philharmonic as I have seen some hints the AW23 was still offered at the same time they introduced the Philly. It makes some sense to me they upgraded from the optional remote VRE box to an optional built in VRE based on the Philly design which had it built in.

and that's what I get for trying to make a post from a handheld device.

The letter would be very interesting, especially including the date. I also need to dig up the exact wording in the one issue of the Scott Servicemen's Bulletin that <might> refer to the AW27. This winter I am going to make a point of going through all my letters quite carefully looking for more clues.

I have one letter referencing the AW-27 as a Full Range High Fidelity Receiver with special circuits. To my knowledge this is the only original EH Scott Radio Laboratories reference to the model. I will scan and post the letter when I have a chance.

Reformatted note from Kent...

This makes the 18th AW27 set. In spite of this number (more of these exist than the pre-war FM tuner), there is no advertising, documentation or really anything on the "Baby-Q".

If you have any letters, documentation, an ad...if you have anything that might tell us more about the AW27, please share it here. Thanks!
