1938 Philly BOL Dial

Made a locale purchase of this 1938 Philharmonic been a collector of consoles since the 90's this is the first Scott to come across. I see there has been a discussion already about the dial. Let me know your thoughts on this one. The warrant certificate is dated 5/5/38 and the cabinet has an engraved date of June of 1938 under the lid from what I suspect done by the cabinet maker. The amp other than the tubes and two electrolytics is all original. The receiver is also all original other than an RCA jack added to the phono out. Wondering if it was originally a dial pointer set or was it the first run of a mid 38 BOL or maybe since it has a log indicator was added or replaced around 1939 note also the knobs has wood from 1939? I know the knob situation being original is all over the place on these. Give me your thoughts Thanks.

Hi David the zig zag spring holding the bezel to the cabinet is there and I do know what you're talking about on the hardened steel circular retainer that holds it in the bezel Silvertone bezels from 1936 used the same style fastener kind of like a wire coat hanger thickness thanks for the heads up on making a new one. I'll add some pics. My guess is somewhere in its life the dial glass and scale glass were broken; there is tape adhesive residue on both sides of the bezel probably holding the broken pieces together. All makes sense now. Dial glass broken, dial scale glass cracked the replaced with the 39' setup.

if your cabinet mounted bezel is missing the glass crystal, you are probably also missing the retaining spring to secure the glass. I fashioned a spring using a 3 foot "piano wire" from my ACE hardware store. This spring steel wire is very hard. I used a mallet and cold chisel to cut it to length. Used a paint can as a form against which to bend it into an approximatly the correct diameter. Put a small bend at one end as a grab tab to be able to extract the spring and fine tune the tension before risking placing the glass into the bezel. Then painted the spring gold. 

Final step is inserting the glass and then the home made spring into the bezel. hopefully, you have the zig-zag spring that secures the bezel to the cabinet's front wood panel.

If anyone has an original long shaft on//off toggle switch let me know, I saw the old threads from 5 years ago about members buying some NOS off of EB in lots of 10 and having extras. My only other choice is to go with this one pictured, hate to do that there is just something wrong with putting a Made in China part when there could be some NOS ones out there.

I think the part that Dave is referring to is the retainer spring that holds the domed glass into the bezel,

As commented in this thread not all bezels are the same so what ever you decide to do measure carefully and remember that Scott was a custom set builder
