Philharmonic: possible capacitor discrepancy ?

I have a Philharmonic that I have begun to clean up. My next step is to replace the capacitors found on the power supply.

I have a question about the four screw-in can capacitors on the top surface of the power supply.

The component drawing indicates that these are C-65, C-66, C-67, and C-68 and gives values of 60, 40, 30, and 60 mfd respectively.

The ones that are actually on my radio have the values 40, 30, 30, and 30 mfd.

Does anyone know if these values were changed by the company at one time (meaning that I should replace according to what is there now) or is it more likely that someone replaced these in the past and just put in whatever they had?  I've included a couple of photographs, one of the top deck and a second showing the connections below.

Thanks!

The four capacitors in question are in the center of the above photograph.

The photo below shows the underside (note Rider diagram below). I believe that beginning at the 6'oclock position and going clockwise they are: C-65, C-66, C-67, and C-68.

I would replace them as found ..Make sure you get right voltage rating on them!Todays caps are far better made than the old ones.. Good Luck Angelo

Ken,

I recently went through the same question on the Philharmonic I'm presently working on. The Service document schematic seems to show 40, 30, 30 & 60 uF. I found the same values that you have. I hung a scope on the 250v line and hung extra cap on suspect values to find that there was no improvement in ripple. I kept the original values. You may find hum issues with the set, but it's unlikely to come from this power supply. It's designed like a tank.

Another supply check is to simply remove the second audio 6J5s and measure output at speaker. Hum values should be almost zero with good output tubes..

Good luck,

Bill

Thanks so much, Angelo and Bill. I will replace these according to the values that are in the radio.
