The side grills became standard across all cabinet models a few months before the AW-23 was introduced Spring 1935. Scott used the term "tone truth" for the cabinets with side grills. In 1937 when the Philharmonic was introduced, the side grills were no longer seen, and most cabinets were up sized (taller and 4 or so inches deeper to accommodate the bigger chassis.

A cabinet housing an AW-23 but lacking the side grills is a marker for an older model having been updated with a newer model radio.
