EH Scott Radio Enthusiasts

The Fine Things are Always Hand Made

Hello all,

I recently inherited what appears to be an EH Scott Philharmonic with the band of light type dial. I am presently uploading some pictures to my profile page. It appears to be complete, though it does not work. It is pretty dirty and the chrome is a bit pitted/rusted in places, but the damage looks mostly cosmetic. One of the large capacitors looks like it leaked/ruptured.

My understanding is that it was unplugged in working condition at least 30+ years ago, then plugged in once since then and did not function. I have not plugged it in myself (and wasn't planning to until looking it over).

It has a serial number LL-154 on the outside plate on the receiver. Written in grease pencil on the inside of the power supply chassis is the number LL-161.

I was wondering if anyone, based on the pictures and the serial number, could tell me a bit more about it (e.g. model number, year manufactured etc...).  I am presently doing some research about it to see if I can get it working again.  I've found some schematics but it appears to be from a different model as several of the components in the radio don't match the specs.  Of course I don't know if this was because it was repaired at some point with different parts....

Thanks!

Walter

It is  after the dial pointer Philly's, and I believe before the red dial and the AM/FM Philly's.  Kent King may be able to give you an approx date.  I am going to say 1938 would be close.

There may not be a proper schematic for it available, and you will have to settle for "close"

You need to replace the electrolytic caps at minimum to get it going.

Thanks Scott, I appreciate the info. After a few relatively minor repairs (suspect caps, a fuse, some wires) I was able to get it working. The reception/performance was pretty poor, but I was able to pick up a few stations. I plan to keep fiddling with it to see if I can get it to work better.

I am still on the hunt for better schematics...even if only "close".  The wire diagram I found is close to unreadable due to the low resolution. Perhaps I will try asking Kent King as you suggest to see if he knows of something with a bit better quality.

Thanks again!!

Walter

Walter.  I can't see any text of your response in the post above.  Yet when I click on your name, I can see part of the response in the list of discussions that you responded to.

Maybe you can please try posting again.

Scott,

Not sure what happened there. I actually can't see my own reply either except for parts in the thread summary. Weird... Anyway, hopefully this works better.

What I had tried to say was to thank you for the information and to say that I was actually able to get the radio working (somewhat) by replacing/fixing some obvious problems, but the radio still needs some work for sure as I was only able to pick up a few radio stations, and poorly at that. I am still trying to track down better schematics...even if they aren't for the exact model, it would help to have readable ones as the ones I have have very poor image quality. Maybe I will be out of luck in the endeavor. Perhaps I will try Kent King as well.

Again, thanks for the info. I appreciate it a lot!

Best,

Walter

Hi Walter,

The only schematic I know of is the same as Riders.  It was reproduced from Scott literature.

I find the schematics available for the Philharmonics to be of unacceptable quality to work off of.  I have redrawn both the early and the later AM/FM schematics.  I just finished the early one and have not spent a lot of time proofing it, but I think it is 99% good.  I also changed the layout of the schematic for easier reading.  Below is a sample of a corner of the schematic.  I will not distribute an electronic version of these, but I will sell a printed copy that is 18"x24" for $20 post paid.  The cost just covers my printing, mailer envelope, postage and time and gas to drive to the PO to mail it.  I anticipate  adding voltage and resistance measurements to the schematic in the future.

Hi Scott,

That is really kind of you to offer me a copy of the schematics you are developing. Your schematic looks great and appears to be coming along nicely. I would gladly take one!

I will see if I can direct message you my address info and such to keep it off the message board and we can go from there.

Thank you again!
