The Fine Things are Always Hand Made

does anyone know if the dial meter on the AW 15 and the AW 12 are the same (I mean interchangable)

I have a 12 tube parts chassis with (what I think is a) good meter and the 15 tube chassis that I am working on has a bad coil in the meter that is behind the dial.  Can they interchange?

Not interchangeable. As for interchanging between the 2 models - First, notice you have a mounting bracket issue. The AW-12 has a mount bracket on the right side of the meter housing. The AW-15 and AW-23 the mount is on the left side of the housing. Furthermore, the AW-15 (and AW-23) meter coil has about 500 ohm resistance. The AW-12 meter about 1400 ohms. Compare both meters for resistance with these values.

Make sure your inoperative AW-15 meter is not just a matter of a broken lead wire from the meter coil to the solder joint. The coil wire is very fine, and fragile. I have fixed one with this problem. Remove the meter from the housing, carefully protecting the fine wire that serves as the meter. Then carefully inspect the unit with a magnifying glass for a broken wire.

If a break, then with care you can re-solder it. Carefully scrape or sand with FINE sand paper to remove the enamel to get a clean copper surface. You may need to unwind one turn off the coil to get enough wire to reach the solder joint. Or use a short length of heavier gage wire from the solder joint to reach to the fine coil wire. Suggest you practice working with very fine wire before you address the meter coil.

If you can't repair your meter, maybe we can make a deal for a working AW-15 meter I have. Let me know at dcp944@yahoo.com

Thanks for the info,

I will try to fix this one first.  I looked and the wire is gone, probably broken off at some point, heck..I may have even done it when I removed it to clean the housing for the restoration.

If I can"t get it fixed I will contact you and see if we can come to an agreement on the one you have.

thank you for the info and the offer of the working meter.

I have the radio working and am building a small project box with an output transformer and two seperate high wattage wire wound power resistors for the two fields of the speaker.  I have a very nice Electro-Voice 12 inch speaker that I am going to use because I don't have an original pedestal speaker for the AW15 set up, just the tuner and amp.
