The Fine Things are Always Hand Made

I've got the tuner for a Phantom, but no power supply / amp unit for it.  I can possibly buy the power supply / amp for an Allwave.  Can this be modified in order to work with the Phantom tuner, or should I keep looking for the Phantom power supply?

It would be difficult to mate the power amplifier from an earlier Scott Allwave receiver to the Phantom.  I would wait for the correct Phantom power amplifier to become available.  If your Phantom is a later version, there is a power amplifier on eBay right now mislabeled as being for an allwave model.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-EH-SCOTT-ALLWAVE-RADIO-POWER-SUPPLY-AN...

Thanks Norman for your response.  Yea, I saw that amp on eBay and did not think it looked right for belonging to an Allwave. I asked the seller what tubes are in there and he said (2) 6J5, (2) 6L6 and (2) 5U4.  According to my Phantom schematic, it shows (2) 6J5, (2) 6V6 and (2) 5V4 for that unit, which is pretty close to what is on eBay.  So, you are thinking that eBay one did come from a Phantom?  You said "if your Phantom is a later version......"  what different versions did they make for the Phantom, and how do I tell which one I have?   I appreciate your help!  -Mark-

Mark:

Yes, EH Scott Radio Laboratories made at least three distinct versions of the Phantom.  The original Phantom, the Phantom Deluxe, and the AM-FM Phantom.  Going from recollection the Phantom has a total of 19 tubes, the Phantom Deluxe has a total of 20, and the AM-FM Phantom had a total of 28.  The power amplifier on eBay was for a Phantom Deluxe or AM-FM Phantom.  More information on the difference between models can be found in the set folders accessible by the Scott Info Archive link at the top of this page.

Thanks for the info there Norman.  I've had this Phantom tuner for several years, but have not done anything with it yet... been keeping an eye out for the Amp / PS to go with it.  My tuner has a total of 14 tubes, counting the tuning eye, so along with the 6 tubes in the Amp section, that would add up to 20.  Unless the tuning eye should not be counted along with the rest of the tubes?  Thanks again for your help... I look forward to getting this Phantom working.

Mark:

Yes, the tuning eye should be counted.

Thanks again Norman - I checked out the info in the set folders that you pointed me to, and see now that the 19 tube Phantom did not have the higher frequency band (22 - 60 Mhz) Mine does indeed have that band.  Having those service manuals in the archive section will be very handy when I start restoring this puppy.
