The Fine Things are Always Hand Made

Hi:  Could someone recommend a place to buy a repro dial scale strip for the AW-15?  Thanks!

Steve:

Reproduction dial scales for the Allwave Fifteen have been available from several vendors over the years but I am unaware of anyone selling the reproduction dial scales today.  I have high resolution scans of NOS Scott dial scales that I will upload for those who want to attempt their own reproductions.

Norman

Thanks, Norman -- I'll experiment with these -- I appreciate the quick response.  If I have any luck I'll let you know.

Hello Steve,

Just saw your post.  I am working on having a dial made for my AW12 Delux.  If the process is successful I will also do the AW 15.  Looking for a suitable material uopn which to silk screen the dial.

BTW, I live in Harpers Ferry, WV about 1 hour from you up I81.

Would like to meet you sometime and compare notes on our Scotts.  My phone number is 304-876-6483.

Hello Howard -- I was thinking of a print shop downtown that might be able to transfer/copy the dial scale onto a piece of similar thickness clear acrylic strip  ---- silk screening is a great idea but I don't know much about it..........Good luck!  Please keep me posted on how you do with the AW12 dial.

I have learned  many lessons in redoing the AW15 - not to the bare chassis like Norman's resto, but certainly good enough.  This is my first E. H. Scott challenge after years of seeing pictures and lots of reading.  It is an amazing radio (as you all know) - most of the 30's sets, and even later ones, I have redone have need extensive rewiring due to insulation being dried out, cracking or having fallen off.  This Scott presented near perfect wiring with no replacements needed, justone example of the quality evident in the set wherever you look.  I would enjoy meeting you and conversing Scott lore and experiences.  I'll check with you after the New Year and normalcy returns.  Happy New Year.

I have a AW 23 that had a dial strip which broke and was able to get an identical one from Radio Daze for $25. I had to relocate a mounting hole and notch some locators but it was perfect in every other respect.

I would contact them to see if one is available.

Thanks, Al--I looked at Radio daze earlier and they had an AW12 dial scale listed, but not the AW15.  Now it turns out they have an AW23 also which also means they most likely have the AW15.  I'll check with them........I ended up very carefully using a soft cloth, plain water and dish soap to gently clean the strip I had on both sides.  The danger with an ordinary set is that the paint will come off after decades.  Not the AW15 -- paint was not affected at all and it cleaned up really well.  I want to follow through with Norman's strips to see if I can reproduce them......for future reference.
