The Fine Things are Always Hand Made

Reading an original Scott newsletter today, he introduced the new Masterpiece receiver and also said he had acquired 50 cabinets he called the MAYFAIR which he would give away free to the 1st 50 Masterpiece customers.

What was this cabinet ?

I suspect they were left over McMurdo cabinets and he also said this cabinet was equiped to hold a record player also. I have an original Mayfair McMurdo MP 4 cabinet from circa 1935 and it did indeed also have an RP and is the size of an 800B cabinet with 2 woofers and 2 tweeters.

There is a really good chance that Scott got the cabinet name wrong. As you know, the Mayfair was a large, costly, upscale cabinet offered with earlier models. It is very unlikely that McMurdo Silver Corporation stocked up on and stored Mayfair cabinets. The Oxford cabinet, however, was a standard model and Scott receivers (as well as later Davega models) have been found in modified versions of the Oxford cabinet.

Very possible except he also specifically said the new cabinet was designed to hold a record player in addition to the 16 radio. It is true the old Oxford by Scott was a re-purposed McMurdo Oxford and the later 'New' Oxford was a side by side Radio/RP.

Another mystery to be solved someday perhaps.

Indeed.  Another mystery to be solved!  I wonder if the referenced McMurdo Silver Mayfair cabinet was of a different design intended to house the elusive (very... none found to date) Orpheon and if so became the later Scott Oxford cabinet.  We will probably never know.
