McMurdo Silver Masterpiece VI

I am scaling down due to moving and I am considering keeping only MP4 and MP5 while letting go an unmolested MP6 with a good 18" speaker in Oxford cabinet.  Here is my dilemma - I have seen too many…Continue

How to select non-noisy tubes?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Brad Winder Mar 30, 2020. 5 Replies

My FM Philharmonic is getting noisy.  All tubes test good and non-microphonic.  I have a stash of replacement tubes and I wonder what is the best strategy for selecting "quiet" tubes.  The audio…Continue

Grille cloth for McMurdo Silver Oxford cabinet

Started Aug 23, 2018 0 Replies

So I acquired a Masterpiece VI in Oxford cabinet, surprisingly with the 18" Jensen speaker, but a with a hideous piece of a curtain instead of the actual grille cloth. I wonder(1) how did look the…Continue

"Jiri - Not inappropriate at all. I share your concern, too many of the high end sets are split up for $$. I hope we can find a good, safe home for this set, it should be kept together. Kent"

McMurdo Silver Masterpiece VI

I am scaling down due to moving and I am considering keeping only MP4 and MP5 while letting go an unmolested MP6 with a good 18" speaker in Oxford cabinet.  Here is my dilemma - I have seen too many MP5's and MP6's sold without a speaker, even by people I am considering collectors.  The temptation to make quick money by selling the speaker separately to Asia is too great I suppose.  I would like to sell the radio to a serious collector who will keep the radio intact, not to a flipper.  That…See More

"I would love to get the serial number. The cabinet is reminiscent of a jukebox to me. Not a horrible price, that translates to about $400 USD. Unfortunately, it is in the wrong location."

I had to ask a friend to do me favor and make a copy of a paper published in Scott News in 1994.  This "new" Scott News were published in 1990's.  I wonder whether the issues of "Scott News" have been scanned and saved somewhere.  My internet searches were futile.  Thanks, Jiri

McMurdo Silver / Jensen 18 inch speaker

Posted on March 15, 2018 at 6:10pm 2 Comments

So I finally found an 18" speaker for my Masterpiece V in Clifton cabinet.  The original speaker is most likely in Japan, courtesy of a greedy seller.

The MP5 amplifier in my radio has a six-pin socket for the speaker cable, and the speaker I have has a cable with six-pin connector as well.  What concerns me are the measured field coil resistances - 3410 Ohms between pins 1-6, and 365 Ohms between pins 3-6, respectively.  Both coils are connected in series.

These resistances…
