Amplitude Modulation and Bandwidth...

Started this discussion. Last reply by Michael Lawton Sep 30, 2021. 4 Replies

Over the years I have heard a lot of discussions about bandwidth in AM radio. Thinking about the basics of amplitude modulation, I never quite understood what all this fuss was about, or exactly…Continue

My 800B, a slow work in progress...

I'm starting this thread to document the progress on my 800B, amassing the components, and then the eventual restoration, testing, sorting out of problems, more testing, and eventual final results.…Continue

Want to buy 800B power supply /amp

Started this discussion. Last reply by Lance Hughes Feb 28, 2021. 11 Replies

OK, I'll admit it, I've been bitten by the E. H. Scott bug. After refurbishing my SLRM and seeing how well it works, I saw an 800B on eBay which I could not resist for the "buy it now" price of $75 !…Continue

When I was a kid, I used to listen to Jean Shepherd on WOR 710KC out of New York City every night. He was one of Americas great humorists. He would tell stories for 45 minutes every night. Here is…Continue

"Yes, Igor, that is pretty much what I said, however perhaps in simpler words. The principle is THE SAME with both AF amplitude modulation of an RF carrier frequency, and the combination a received RF signal with a local oscillator signal to produce…"

"Just another take- The answer is in the mathematics of a modulated AM signal.  Without a lengthy treatise of the equations, when an audio signal of let's say 5 kHz bandwidth (realistically containing audio signal from 40 Hz to 5 kHz) is…"

"Yes, David, I understand that principle, basically what the small caps do is DE-TUNE the IF transformer, thus broadening the passed band of frequencies, and reducing the selectivity. What I was always hazy about was the WHY of the sidebands, WHY did…"

David C. Poland replied to Michael Lawton's discussion Amplitude Modulation and Bandwidth...
"Forget about the notion of side bands for audio quality. I think of it this way with regard to the IF amplifier.  The audio signal is a low frequency amplitude signal (with an audio range of maybe 80 to 4000 HZ of maybe 50 to 8000 Hz) which is…"

Amplitude Modulation and Bandwidth...

Over the years I have heard a lot of discussions about bandwidth in AM radio. Thinking about the basics of amplitude modulation, I never quite understood what all this fuss was about, or exactly HOW these "sidebands" ended up being generated. After all, AM is merely the increasing and decreasing of the carrier wave strength based on the fluctuation of an audio wave form. The detection of the signal merely consists of the rectification of that carrier wave, and the smoothing out of the…See More

"Hi Kent, Not sure if You caught it from the picture of the serial number plate I posted when I was refurbishing my SLRM, but the number is 2446. Also, my 800B tuner is 1405."

My 800B tuner chassis arrived...

Posted on March 3, 2021 at 10:47pm 4 Comments

Today the 800B tuner chassis I bought off eBay for $75 arrived. It seems to have traveled none the worse for wear. I was rather surprised to find that just this tuner weighs as much as my whole SLRM, or seems to just picking it up. I haven't actually weighed it. Now that it has arrived, here are some pictures of it...…
