Hello all you Scott lovers. Can I tear you away to another love--McMurdo sets--for a minute? I never had one and would like to find a set that just might be the last console Anna allows me to squeeze…Continue

Something Called A Magnavox Concert Grand I forgot to discuss!

Posted on August 17, 2015 at 9:44pm 9 Comments

With all my talk about the top radios we all love, I forgot to tell you about my Magnavox Concert Grand, the 1861 console phonograph that is considered by many the finest console stereo phonograph ever made. First there is the outstanding cabinet which is a beautiful piece of furniture in any of the styles which were released. Mine is the French Provincialin Mahogany and weighs about three hundred pounds and contains 42 (!) tubes. It has a turntable made by Collaro of Britain and uses two…

THE GREAT CROSLEY WLW

Posted on August 17, 2015 at 9:25pm 0 Comments

Hello my friends. It has been quite a while since I've been able to post here and to read posts by others. I had quite a few health problems that also led to financial ones. But I'm here to tell you about my Crosley WLW, which after a full year has finally been totally restored by my man Chuck Azzalina, who did an outstanding job. Believe me when I tell you that this is the finest console radio I have ever heard bar none. It has power to spare for one thing. The bass is quite full, and the…

Bruce:  Thanks for your inquiry.  I have the Barrett set featured but not identified in one of the issues of Scott News (Scott radios in custom homes) and the Beardsley Quaranta that was not featured in any Scott promotional literature but is very likely the last one made and the one reflected in the schematics obtained from Murray Clay.  The speaker console sold on eBay some 10-years ago is likely from the Quaranta sold to the New York customer.

Hi Norman-Is your set the same one that EH Scott advertised and said was made on request by a wife for her husband as a christmas present?

As I also recall Scott used it for a month or so to show off what the company could make on demand.

Being that I have the only original Quaranta radio cabinets in collector captivity and have not been asked for measurements and details, I question how painstakingly exact the reproduction cabinets may be.  Three distinctly different versions of Quaranta radio cabinets and two versions of Quaranta speaker cabinets have been identified and documented.

Norman,

I don't have any photos of the reproduction Quaranta cabinets to share, and from what I understand, they are not for sale.  The maker of the cabinets doesn't want any additional information circulated at this time.  Thanks for understanding, Sam

Sam -

Is there any chance you would be able to obtain and provide a photo of the reproduction Quaranta cabinet?

Hi Gerald,

Your collection list is extremely impressive! You must have spent many years acquiring all those McMurdo-Silvers and surely you have worked on them to make them the best they can be. I can't even imagine 300 units though, OMG! Are most of these consoles? Good to hear you have extra MP V chassis. That may be of help in my quest. I was thinking if I could not locate an original cabinet of getting the lovely repro Clifton. Not sure how collectors look at those value-wise but that and the lovely Carlton would be first choices followed by Croydon and Lyndon consoles. But I'm not sure they have lids to see the chrome, which I would definitely prefer. Another goal would be to get the Super-Giant speaker. How many of those do you have---I'm sure many more than one!! Scott wise you also have done very well I know where there is a painstakingly made exact repro of the Quaranta cabinet. I am prepared to show more patience than I have in the past. I acquired radios very fast this year, to the point of eating up all available space and having to buy four big shelf units for the table radios. I have a Scott Acousticraft Phantom Deluxe for trade or sale and also my best piece--the very hard to find Scott Buckingham Philharmonic beam of light with incredible chrome will be used for trade if a MS comes up. My email is sms@bee.net. I would absolutely love seeing some of your collection and I can send you photos of mine if interested. Thanks much, Sam

Hello and welcome Sam.  I do indeed collect and restore Silver radios and literature.  I have good examples of the complete Masterpiece line including both the brass and chrome Masterpieces.  I also have several 1517s, 5C and several of the pieces of test equipment made by the last Silver company along with a large inventory of literature and more, including most all Silver Times issues.

I currently have examples of Jacobean, Norwich, Clifton, Oxford, Bristol and the rare slanted front Carlton (as opposed to the flat front) consoles as well as a custom console for the brass radio.

While I have a several extra MP V chassis, unfortunately I have no extra consoles at this time.  Currently I am focusing on acquiring all versions of the Masterpiece line, needing the second MP II amp/ps (I think), Masterpiece III-X, MP IV early non-octal radio, Masterpiece IV-A (three tube amplifier/ps), 21 tube MP V, glass tube MP V tuner, World Wide 9 and the really elusive 14-15 and Orpheon.  Currently, I am working on acquiring an ebony Clifton console but it doesn't look too promising.

I have found that patience and persistence are the greatest virtues in acquiring Silver equipment.  My experience is that attending meets like Lansing & Willowbrook can lead to connections which help in locating and acquiring additional units.  My last extra Clifton went as part of a trade in acquiring the only known Scott FM Masterpiece.

I do work with Scotts also, as that is where I started in with classic radios a few decades ago.  Currently I am approaching 30 some Scotts plus many extra chassis (somewhere approaching 300 total radios).

If I can be of any assistance along the way don't hesitate to give me a shout.  Drop me your direct address and specifics as to your needs or wants and I will let you know if I run across anything you need.  I am in contact with a number of McMurdo folks and things do pop up, as you know.

Cheers and good hunting!
