Philharmonic remote control assistance needed

Hello all,

Trying to begin restoration of a Philharmonic remote control unit. Opened the bottom plate and noticed a couple potential issues. All of the issues appear to be related to the remote control unit. See photos.

Thanks in advance for any assistance that the group can provide.

1. Gear to nowhere? Am I missing something here?

2. Loose wires?

3. No wires connected to switch?

You are complete.

Appears the gear was moved - to allow the vol control to move easier - probably due to lost keypad.

First be sure the volume control motor will run.

With a Variac, test with 24 volts AC. Ground to chassis. Touch probe to the two motor tabs to run each direction.

Then, loosen the large gear set crew on the volume control shaft, slide back to engage the motor gear.

Until for find a keyboard and cable, may want to leave as not meshed.

Test the motor for tuning the same way with Variac at 24 volts.

Regarding the power switch on the volume control, 2 lugs are the main power switch.

The other two lugs are (I think)  power for a phonograph if used. I have a remote control Philharmonic on my bench and just starting restoration.

Suggest you get the set recapped, tested, aligned and playing well before dealing with the remote control aspects.

David,

Thanks for the great advice. Appears that the tuning motor is shorted. Do you normally do a COMPLETE recap of the radio chassis?

I absolutely recap the chassis before powering it up.

I do pull the amp tubes and power the amp with a Variac to check the power transformer is OK. And with the remote control set, check the 24 volt step down transformer that should be on a the amp side apron.

Recapping a Philly: the bass tone reactor on the top left rear (rectangular chrome plated) has two chokes and 4 caps inside. Unsolder the 4 wires and dismount the unit. Failure to replace these caps put the bass control pot at risk. Better access for cleaning the area, too.

For the soldered rectangular box below on the receiver left side apron - replace the 7 caps inside (.5 mfd).
