Shortwave Not Wrorking On My Laureate?

Hello,

Does any one have any suggestions on why the shortwave would not work on a restored EH Scott Laureate I have. The AM works great. The Laureate has a complex antenna circuit hook up in the back and the schematic and technical information mentions a loop antenna which I do not have with the radio. I have just one wire hooked up on one of the AM post and it works really well. I am ready to take the radio out of the cabinet and trouble shot it but, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing any thing as far as the antenna hook up?

I suspect the antenna circuit you have is for standard broadcast only, not for short waves. For short waves a piece of wire should be enough - as you did.

I'm pretty sure you will need the loop antenna for shortwave reception.  Even with the loop, you may experience anemic shortwave reception due to the sunspot cycle and atmospheric conditions.  Broadcast stations can be received without the loop due to the high power of the broadcast stations.

I was experimenting with modern active antenna and Philco 38-690.

I live a very big city, so reception is very poor. 

I even thought my active antenna is not working - anything I could receive with it I could as well receive with a 5 meters' wire across the room. In fact the sencitivity of Philco is so high, it receives just anything above noise level.

In fact, the receiver of Scott should be not worse than that of Philco and the difference between loop antenna and piece of wire will be in lower noise level, that's it.

The shortwave loop antenna is part of the first RF tuned circuit.  Without the loop there will be little if any RF gain and RF tuning will be limited to the plate circuit of the RF amplifier tube.

I checked the Laureate schematics and s.w. loop is a part of the first RF circuit indeed.
