The Fine Things are Always Hand Made

Hi, I am unfortunately selling this Philharmonic Waverly Grand. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=121113690469.

It breaks my heart, but I am moving and can't keep it.  Can anyone give me some more details which I can put into the description?

Unfortunately, based on the photos, there is not much on the positive side that can be said other than that it is substantially complete.  A good cabinet person may be able to restore the cabinet but full restoration of the chassis is not feasible.  When they turn up, replacement chassis in restoreable condition will run $1000 to $2000.  Sadly, what you are offering is best for parts.  To what environment was this set exposed that it deteriorated so severely?

Norman

The only think of value I see are the original optional tweeters.

Sad indeed. About the worst corroded chassis I have seen.
Things of value?
Perhaps the cabinet, one of the more upscale cabinets, if veneer is not badly delaminated. Knobs, control escutcheons, maybe the glass dial or maybe the whole dial assembly, the cabinet dial glass and trim ring. The vacuum tubes if the pins are not badly corroded.
Perhaps parts from inside if well enough protected by the metal chassis and by the coil shields.

A lot of good parts on that ..Knobs glass trim ring escutcheons speakers and ill bet the transformers areok and the turntable.I have that same set, knobs hard to find! Cabinet could be repaired but would cost to do that.Never seen a set that bad must have gotten wet! Angelo

The turntable is not original.  The original turntable would have consisted of a larger, low profile earlier platter driven by a flyer motor.  The platter, motor, and tonearm presently installed appear to be post WWII.  With the exception of the switch levers, the knobs are standard generic types often found on the Philharmonic.  The escutcheons and dial bezel will require refinishing - satin gold plate - which is expensive but possibly competitive with finding a full set of good escutcheons and dial bezel.

Ken, I think you did well with the sale of that very rough Philharmonic, considering the condition.

Shockingly good.
