EH Scott Radio Enthusiasts

The Fine Things are Always Hand Made

I am a tube Hi-Fi enthusiast. I enjoy breathing new life into old components that might otherwise be tossed. A while back I had the opportunity to purchase an nice old Scott Sixteen, from what I understand to be in an Acousticraft cab. I have had it for sale on and off over the last few months but have for now have decided to pull it off the market and put it on the project desk and see if I can't get it back up and running.

I hope joining this forum might put me in touch with other collectors out there that enjoy the hobby as I do and hopefully help if needed.

I am posting a few photo's and the serial number straight away. I am the second owner of the radio. Maybe I should start out by asking, do I have the model and cabinet described correctly?

Lonnie:

Welcome!   You have the model and cabinet correct.  If not already picked up by Kent King, the serial number on your receiver adds significant knowledge to our understanding of Scott Sixteen production.  Please let us know if you have questions regarding your receiver.  Many of us are here to help.

Norman, That's great. I am quickly finding out that it was a silly idea to let this Scott go. I am going to pull the chassis out today and see if I cant get to the bottom of the tuner belt mechanics, maybe start polishing it up and restoring the laquer, reading through a few posts here lets just say I'm glad I didn't do something to wreck the factory finish. You may notice in my profile picture is another Scott cabinet.. It housed an 800B/Amp, and Jensen Coax, I have the Turntable and drawer but someone else got the guts and parted them away..sad,I would have loved to complete that unit also. I pulled it out of the same basement. I am hoping someday to find the rest, even cobbled back it will be neat. For now it doubles as a stand.

Lonnie, if interested, I have an extra chassis set for the 800B.  I might also have the speaker.  If you need to replace the dial belt on the Sixteen, it is useful to know that there were two sizes used on different production runs of this model.  Earlier discussions on this site provide more details.  If you cannot find them, let me know and I will dig out the information again.

Lonnie,   the 2 belts are sometime listed on ebay. The #119 has cut length of 9 23/32  inches and circumference around the pulley of 9  17/32. The #152 cut is 10  11/16 and circum of  10  1/2.

Various # belts often  seen on ebay  were manufactured by General Cement or JFD. Also Walsco manufactured belts. If you need the #119, I can supply one by Walsco (WALTER L SCHOTT CO). Let me know.

Thanks Dave, that is great. Send me an email with your info, That will get me a step closer. I'm still busy on the amplifier for now. I scored a beautiful pair of rectifiers for it.. I have several that work but would really like a matched set of period output   tubes. Most of my tube inventory is late fifties and forward.  Lonnie

Lonnie,

I am dcp944@yahoo.com

Not that they will assist my Sixteen's restore directly as replacement parts but.. I posted a picture of some REALLY nice Cunningham CX-345's. I picked them up at a local estate sale.  They test super strong, deceptively strong. None of my testers have a Gas test for these..that I can locate.  The testers I have to use are a Precision 912, and Knght 600B. The 600B will perform gas test on other tubes but has no data for the 45 series. Is this because of the design of the tube? The Cunningham tubes..if they are as good as they test, (100 on the Knight) may help with the financial budget I have put on the Sixteen restore.  Because of the potential value and rarity of these  I want to be able to assure any potential new owner that they have been thoroughly tested/certified.  I typically deal with newer tubes and have only recently started playing with these old triodes. I am fascinated with them to the point I am looking into building a pair on amps down the road to run on my new Cornwalls.  Any triode gurus out there wiling to offer any input?  Thanks, Lonnie.

PS... The Sixteens amp sounds super nice, speaker is working, I'm moving on to the tuner.
