Philharmonic tapped volume control.

I posted about this a few weeks back, looking for a replacement.I’ve been unsuccessful in finding a replacement, and nor can  see how to fix the original. I’ve dismantled it and can't see any damage…Continue

Caps under Coil shields on Philharmonic?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Norman S Braithwaite on Sunday. 9 Replies

The McMurdo Silver sets have caps above chassis, under the chrome coil shields. Do the Scott Masterpiece sets have them also, or are all the caps on these sets underneath the chassis? I ask because…Continue

Volume pot for Philharmonic.

Started this discussion. Last reply by Scott Seickel Jul 29. 3 Replies

The volume control on my Philharmonic became very noisy and intermittent. Replaced it temporarily with another, but now want to find the correct item with the 20,000 ohm tap. Does anyone know of a…Continue

Scott vs McMurdo Silver

Started this discussion. Last reply by jonathan dollimore Jul 24. 7 Replies

A few years back someone in the US vintage radio world posted somewhere that they had been working on a McMurdo Silver 15-17 and rather controversially argued that it performed better than the…Continue

"The higher value domino type capacitors in the Metropolitan 16A expander circuit are really wax paper capacitors, at least in the Metropolitan 16A set that I restored. Norman"

"Haven’t tested the caps yet, the resistors are out of spec. 47k measures 58k, 56ohm measuring 67ohms. "

"When you say the mica caps were out of spec, were they just measuring low?  Did you test for leakage?  Just curious as I don't find too many that are out, but leakage in these is becoming more common as the silver migrates. "

"I did pull one of them, the first one wasn’t so bad. Both resistors under it were 20% out of spec, both caps were Mica.  other Mica caps in this set were out of spec but haven’t pulled these to check them. "

"The 16A is MUCH newer and generally you won't have any components inside those smaller units to worry about - generally they are just adjustable coils, which can be trimmed without removing the covers (which is hard on that set).…"

"My FM and AM are inoperable on my 16A. I am just working my way through the FM signal path and most of the 6200pf mica capacitors are out of spec. But I ran into this also, should I take the covers off and replace the caps inside? Will they cause…"

"It would be nice if someone else had a set with an original vol pot that they could measure too.  Most have been replaced and it is hard to come across an original one.  We know that the EH Scott schematic and documentation has numerous…"

"Interesting video. Worth trying. Seems the 20K tap on a 500K pot was consistent on the diagrams for the 1937 Philharmonic of 5/1937,  Sixteen and Super 12. The 1939 Philly diagram (Riders 14,pg 43-44) shows a 50K tap on the diagram. I see the…"

"The few Scotts that I've had apart (AW-12 two and 1 dial, AW-15, AW-23, and the Philharmonic) all have components (i.e. resistors and paper capacitors) under the coil shields.  As Kent said, you need to remove the shields anyway, to clean…"
