The Fine Things are Always Hand Made
I found this reference in a 1928 sales booklet. I would like to find the piece described. Next best - a good scan of one if you have it:

The title says it all...does anyone recognize this as a McMurdo Silver cabinet? I'm guessing it is not, obviously the mounting is all wrong. Opinions?…

OK folks...question: Here is the schematic of the outboard volume expander for an AW23. I was working on one earlier today and noticed a mod that I had not seen before. If this mod isn't factory, it was done a <long> time ago - near its original production. The mod is simple - a 20ufd/25VDC cap is wired from the 6A7 cathodes to ground (+ side on the cathode). It is soldered right on the wiper of the balance potentiometer. Any thoughts on what this might do? Should I remove it/leave it…

If anyone can look at the underside of a red-band Philharmonic Deluxe, I need to know where the switches and the variable capacitors should be at each end of the rotation. After recapping, I realized this set has been played with and I do not believe the shaft is properly aligned with the control. Any assistance would be appreciated!
BTW - this is not the same as a pointer dial set - the Deluxe has an extra wafer switch on the shaft - so hopefully someone has another Deluxe…

I've been restoring the early (5 knob) AW23 that was found on a trash pile in Columbus. This was the lightning strike set I wrote about in a different post a couple weeks ago.
This is a VERY early AW23, there are several unique things about this set:
First, the grid lead to the mixer (6A7)...in most sets, the lead comes out through the large tuning cap cover and feeds through a hole in a phenolic piece riveted to the 6B7 shield base. On this set, there is a…

we hear lots of talk these days about supply chain, but Scott suffered from challenges for many years. Here is a new one for me....I am restoring the AW23 that fellow member Kevin found on the trash pile in Columbus a couple months ago. Got it up here over the weekend and opened it up...
it is 100% Potter capacitors. Now I have probably been…

So, it looks like an AW23 speaker, but it doesn't have the two plugs for the tweeters and the stub cable (and no stub cable). The connector is like that used on the pointer Philharmonic (two large pins not together, not like a 23). Pin testing shows it should work on a Philly - but it is a 12 in and no Philly style tweeter connection either. But tagged Scott...I have two of these BTW...the other one has an AW23 style plug on it and tested it with an AW23 and it works great. Any thoughts…

He will be missed. This is a wonderful tribute:
I discovered something today that I had never noticed before. Background - I am working on an FM Phantom which has the later Jones plug connector. I just made a crossover cable with a female Jones plug to a standard Scott round plug to test the tuner with a "standard" amp. I was double checking my new connector and saw the 6.3v filament line on the amp I was working with (my working set in the Stratford cabinet), had the CT grounded. The Jones plug amp with the FM Phantom was grounded on…

When the FM models were introduced in 1940, Scott also began offering a "4 unit" sound system. We've seen tweeter sets with the AW23 and the early Philharmonic sets (both use a Y-cable from the pedestal speaker to two tweeters). The 4-unit systems included a crossover box where you connected the bass speaker and two tweeters, and it also had a jack for an extension speaker. The crossover and 3 speakers constituted the 4-unit system, which sold for $29.50. Later units had a smaller crossover,…

One of the most requested items are Scott wood knobs. Forum member Ben E. has created actual wood reproduction "S" knobs for the late 30s sets. These are universal to everything from the Philharmonic to the Laureate (1937 to 1942). Please check them out at:

So this interesting chassis landed here this weekend, thanks to fellow member Dave Poland. He brought me a Phantom Deluxe, but I quickly realized, it was originally supposed to be an FM Phantom. In the first two pictures, note the plugged tube holes and the plugs and extra holes on the side of the chassis.…

Looking for ideas - I haven't dug into this too far yet.
I recapped an AW23 (late) and I'm now working on the alignment. Voltage checks were in spec. IF alignment went right by the service data and trimmed out nicely. By the time I got back to the 1st IF, I had significantly reduced the generator output to keep the meter from going over - gain was excellent. On to AM band - 1400 trimmer is super close, slight tweak and then dial down to 600. At about 750, the two neon VR tubes…

Picked up this one at an auction in Indiana. Disgustingly dirty, but salvageable. Had the 15 in speaker, tweeters, and a Tauscher sound board! Cabinet is good to start...the whole set will require a lot of work but will be saved.

All - The moderators removed an account that was a bit "phishy" today. We try hard to keep these folks off the forum, but every once in awhile, one gets in. Please ignore/delete any questionable messages and let's keep on talking Scotts!

I've spent several days working on a particularly difficult chassis and learned something I thought I'd share. First, here is what I had to start with: A nice single chassis Super XII. The IF aligned beautifully, and the 3 SW bands also aligned "by the book". The set sounded great on any SW band, AM was basically dead. There are only 3 things that are AM only, so I verified each coil. While checking continuity on the oscillator coil, I happened to notice that the 1K resistor seemed to move a…
