EH Scott Radio Enthusiasts

The Fine Things are Always Hand Made

Wanted to introduce myself. My name is Leonid, I am from Moscow, Russia. Just bought E.H.Scott Phantom Delux FM in very decent condition. Totally original. Not tried to power it up yet.  Very nice radio. I am away on business trip right now, so the the serial number is going to be reported a bit later. I don't have decent photos of it yet, going to add them later too.

Leonid -

As Carlos said, Welcome! We know that Scott sold sets all over the world. I am curious, did you find this Phantom in Russia or did you buy it elsewhere and ship it? What cabinet is it in?

We're glad you've joined the group and if there is ever anything you need when working on the set, just ask!

Welcome. You've already been in contact with my friend in St. Petersburg, Mikhail. The Scott Phantom is a nice radio.
It is hardly possible to find Scott in Russia. I never saw one. So I bought it on eBay and it was shipped to Moscow safely. It is in Warrington cabinet, it has 28 tubes, one speaker.

Indeed, I briefly spoke to Mikhail, but never met him in person. Indeed Phantom is very nice!

Did you find your Phantom there or did you purchase it in the U.S. and have it shipped? Mikhail would really like a Philharmonic but is looking for an economical way to ship a complete console to his location plus pack well enough to not be damaged in shipping.

George,
As I wrote above - I bought it on eBay. Shipping is expensive, but I don't buy them every week, right?
Well packed it arrives safely. Alternative is to disassemble the radio completely (including cabinet), but this way is expensive too.

What was the cost to ship it and how quickly did it arrive? Did the seller actually make a wooden shipping container or use a large box? Since Mikhail would really like a Philharmonic I'm trying to determine the expensive way to ship one as well as the type of container that is best to prevent shipping damage.

George,
Shipping cost depends on ability of the seller. The best if he or she has a contract with shipping company. Then the cost of shipping of the radio of this size is about $400. Then there are customs duties and VAT. It arrived very quickly - it took two weeks only, even may be less. 1st of November I won the auction, 20th of November I had it at home unpacked. Some time ago I received a Philco 38-690 radio the same way. It was packed very well, crated actually. Arrived safely. This Phantom was not crated, was packed in a cardboard box with some paking material of course. It was also enough not to damage it on the way. So there is always a balance between higher weight and higher risk.

Thanks for the information on shipping. That tells me that there's a less expensive way to ship by UPS other than their 3-4 day price. I used the on-line shipping calculator and 3-4 day delivery, on the approximate size and weight of a comparable Philharmonic, was over $1600.00.
