The Fine Things are Always Hand Made

Does anyone have an extra allwave 15 power transformer or could recommend someone who can rewind it? Mine seems to have shorted due to a bad filter capacitor.

Hi John:

I had the same problem with my Allwave 23. Mal Fuller suggested that I contact Heyboer transformer co. in Grand Haven Mi.

They were able to wind a new transformer for me. It took several months due to their work load, but the cost was reasonable for a one off part. There are some minor construction differences between old and new, but it works just fine.

I was able to send them the original transformer and all the specifications. I picked up the new transformer along with the original in October of last year.

Thom:

Thanks for the reply about the transformer, sounds like what I will do. Looking at some other postings it sounds like the new transformer was a tad too big for the chrome mountings, was that because you upgraded the specifications? Do you know if the AW 23 is the same as the AW 15 transformer?

John

From what I can find, they would not be the same. The allwave 15 has 5 windings and the allwave 23 has 7.

The 5 windings are primary for 120 volts with a tap for 110. Secondary for 2.5 volts @ 12 amps for the radio filaments, a second 2.5 volt at 3 amps for the output tubes, a high voltage winding and a 5 volt winding for the rectifier.

The extra windings on the 23 are a 2nd high voltage and a 6.3 for the radio chassis, plus a 2nd 5 volt winding for the 2nd rectifier tube which takes the place of one of the 2.5 volt windings.

This information comes from Marvin Hobbs book 2nd edition.

The new transformer is assembled with bolts in all four corners while the original has only two bolts in the center holes of the laminations. It is also just a bit larger with the leads coming out the sides instead of the bottom of the windings.
