The Fine Things are Always Hand Made

Currently restoring 4 McMurdo-Silver chrome plated chassis: two Masterpiece Vs and two 15-17s. Need a power supply/amplifier chassis for one Masterpiece V, and an original 15" speaker for same.  Would prefer an 18" Jensen pedestal speaker if one can be found.

Have 2 cabinets to eventually sell, an Oxford and a Norwich. Would like to speak with someone about values for these cabinets, I know the Norwich is quite rare, it is the one with record player on top.  I have the record player and it works.

Would appreciate any help with this project, as I am a newbie as far as McMurdo-Silver is concerned.  I do own a Scott Allwave 23.

I guess, 18" Jensen were used also for MPV? Have never seen MPV with 15" speaker.

I have MPVI and was also looking for 18" pedestal speaker for it. A good one sells for $4,5k, which is too much I assume...

MP V and VI both used the 18" super-jumbo Jensen.

These weigh 55 lbs if you have not seen one in person. Lately on ebay they have been selling for about $8k. They used 2 different cone materials with the idea being one was for treble notes and one for the bass. The MP V version has a switch on the back to change the response to enhance the treble.

I don't know about 15" speakers being sold with MPV, but probably not (see Y2KBruce reply).  You are correct, the 18" are very expensive so a 15" may be a good compromise, but to use it would require some rewiring as it and the 18" are very different.  .

Pics.

Thanks.

Here are 2 pics of the Norwich, the Oxford needs refinishing.

I think, two Jenesen A12 can be a perfect replacement for a 18" monster - if to connect field coils in series and voice coils in parallel. I guess some people already did it before - have a look at MPV pictures here:

I have MPVI without a speaker and two A12s, so I will try this trick somewere later, since I gave up attempts to get a reasonably priced 18" Jensen....

That looks like an excellent option!  Thanks!

There are at least 2 versions of the Jensen A12 field coil speakers. While they both have the same voice coil values, they have different field coil values. One has a 250 ohm field and the other is 5000 ohms. Hammond organ company used these in their early tone cabinets. The 250 ohm coil is in the bias circuit for the output tubes and the 5000 ohm coil is across the B+ line. I had a pair of these rebuilt about 14 years ago and still have a pair in storage.

Hi Thomas, using 2 A12s may be an option.  Are the spares for sale, and are they working?  Thanks, Phil

Phil:

The ones I have in storage should be in good condition. Don't remember if they are the ones I had rebuilt or if they are from another cabinet I had. I am willing to sell them. Not sure for how much.

Am interested, can you check to see, and decide on a price?  My email is pbartells@verizon.net, cell is 434-665-3880.

Am I mistaken, or is that a Scott AW23 or Philharmonic amp/power supply in the back of that Masterpiece V with the two 12 inch woofers and tweeter on the Radiomuseum site? It doesn't look like a McMurdo SIlver amp to me.

Disclaimer: I admit to still being rather "new" to Scott and Silver radios.

And it looks like someone went to the trouble of reproducing the sticker as used on the back of the MP VI Super-Giant and stuck it on both 12 inch woofers and tweeter. I would like to know if more repro stickers like that are available anywhere.
