Curious if the Metropolitan has same or similar sized dash/dial as the 800b ?

Similar but not a suitable substitute.

-No  shortwave band on the 16-A

-only one eye tube, on the right side.

Also - the 28 tube Metropolitan 16-A receiver has an additional 4 tubes - the 4 tube H H Scott Dynaural noise suppression for playing 78 RPM records.  Reduced both record scratch and turn table rumble

Can be considered a further development of the E H Scott scratch suppressor circuit of the late 1930's Philharmonic and Phantoms.  H H Scot developed the Dynaural Noise Suppression for radio stations to improve broadcast quality of 78 records. About 1949 iHH Scott introduced this circuit as this first retail product - the Dynaural Converter (some examples say PreAmplifier) model 111 three tube and model 112 four tube units. Power taken from a radio's  output tube socket. The model 112's fourth tube was a amplifier stage for low level magnetic pickups.

I would not doubt the early McIntosh engineers took a page from Scott noise suppression. Their C8 preamps were all about filtered isolation.

The McIntosh C8 has many equalization settings (filters) for reproducing recordings by various companies.  There was no universal equalization standard in the recording industry at the time therefore multiple equalization settings were necessary for correct reproduction.  Equalization filters, however are not dynamic and are not included for the purpose of noise suppression.  To my knowledge, no tube type McIntosh product includes a dynamic noise suppression circuit.

Very true. The C8 was as its namesake indicates, a "compensator". No "broadcast" dynamics as such, but in essence a source type manual hum control pot, based on impedance matching. I regard both as noise "suppressors" in their respective ways.

Scott Labs (formerly E h Scott) also offered a version of the H H Scott's Dynaural system as an outboard option for the 800-B, sometime before H H Scott offered his own retail units..
