AW 23 dial lamp shade

Can anyone shed any light on Allwave 23 dial lamp shades?

Were all 23's supposed to have this black colored shade?

I think they probably all did have them, but my experience in the current era is that about half of them are missing. They help to keep the light going up through the signal meter and dial a bit better, but they work well enough without them.

I have one chassis that has the shield and one without. There isn’t much difference.
