The Fine Things are Always Hand Made

I have an early Philharmonic to be correct should it have plastic or wood knobs? Also is the band switch knob plastic or metal?

Thanks

John

The first version Philharmonic is the pointer dial - Spring 1937 to late 1938.

The knobs are brown plastic, except for a period of time the volume and band knobs were cast metal.

Well...there was a set of wood knobs that looked like the AW23 knobs on the very, very earliest Phillies. But I've only ever seen two sets with those knobs. I'd suggest the plastic knobs and use the bat handle for the wave change and volume.

This is probably the most common set of knobs on a pointer Philharmonic.

The metal "bat wing" type.

But in lieu of the pair of cast metal, the pinch type is acceptable or round like the others.

The wood type like the AW-23 is shown in the owners manual, but is very rare

Sorry, grabbed wrong pointer photo.

Attached photo has the cast metal pointer knobs for volume and wave change.

The large high speed tuning knob can be a challenge to find. I can provide a nice repo with 2 set screws.

Here is a photo of the typical Scott Philharmonic knobs - seen in Scott literature and price list images:

round brown - seen 1937 to 1941. Most shafts .. and sometimes seen for all shafts. Either set screw or push on.

cast metal pointer -  often seen 1937 & 1938 pointer sets for volume and wave change (upper pair). set screw.

pinch brown - 1939 -41.   upper pair.  set screw.

bat wing brown plastic - 1939 -41 upper pair - has set screw.

Sometime in 1941, the Walnut "S" knobs appeared on Philharmonic radios.

Knobs supplied changed, knobs get lost, replacements are added. I offer this photo for reference.
