The Fine Things are Always Hand Made

Hello, I just got this Scott Philharmonic (Serial # E-770) today and examining it to see what will be involved in restoring it. The chrome is fair on both chassis and had to replace 5 metal tubes on the tuner chassis with the proper glass tubes and I ordered (2) 6L7G tubes to replace ones that are missing. I checked the power transformer and it is good. The main speaker will have to be reconed but the tweeters checked good, The cabinet is in decent condition but the decorative trim on the upper part of the cabinet has come off in places--not sure how to fix it at the moment. The round chrome shield on the power unit is badly dented and the chrome is very poor on it--I'll have to find one of those also. I took the bottom off the tuner and the multi-tap candohm resistor is completely open-anyone know what the resistance values are for it? The schematic on this site isn't clear and I can't make out the values for it? I won't be able to rechrome the chassis due to taking a great deal of time to strip the chassis and the cost of rechroming.  I have 3 pics attached-I have more but it looks like 3 is the maximum. The radio is going to take a lot of work to restore it but I'll give it a try.   Ken

Look up those part numbers on Mouser, DigiKey, Allied or any big vendor.  I have had luck getting good prices on Ebay in the past.  The stuff isn't cheap, but makes for a nice job, and at 50 watts the resistor won't be failing anytime soon.

Sounds good Scott, thanks for the info---I will check the sites for the resistor & hardware. I was wondering--the support rod or linkage that holds the lid up in the cabinet is broken--what is the actual name of it as I can't seem to find the proper replacement?  Thanks,  Ken

Hi Scott, went ahead and got the resistor, taps & mounting hardware from Mouser--I checked the original divider and the section from ground to the first tap was open. I'll start restoring the power amp unit next weekend--I got my order of caps in from Just Radios so I can get started on that and then the tuner afterwards. I hate to see what the woofer will cost to re-cone not looking forward to that.    Ken

Kennith,  re: lid support

For your Warrington lid support, you can probably find a satisfactory substitute at you Home Depot or Lowes in the  same area as cabinet handles. Better quality at  a Woodcraft store if one is somewhere near. Probably be bright brass, however.

The lid support "rod" is 5 inches for my big Tasman. For my Waverly Grande, "rod"  is 6 inches. I would send you a photo if you like.

Kenneth,  Did this radio ever get done?  If so, I'd like to see pictures.
