The Fine Things are Always Hand Made

Hello,

I have a phantom with remote control. The motor is very noisy in one direction but quiet in the other. Any thoughts from the group here? Can these motors be rebuilt?

Thank you,

John

One motor is used for both directions.  If quiet in one direction, it is likely that the problem is continuity on the split commutator rather than the motor itself.  Clean and lubricate the split commutator and station contacts before looking elsewhere.  Do not use abrasives.  I use red oil (early version of de-oxit) for lubricating the contact surface.  Sometimes the angle of the station contact may cause noisy operation.  Also do the same for the contacts on the motor.

Norman - curious. Have you actually dismounted the rear housing for the station contacts, so as to inspect the contacts and the condition of the split commutator?

Would seem to be issues with wiring to the antenna terminal strip and with teasing the commutator off the tuning capacitor extended shaft. Not to mention the multi-wire cable to all the contacts.

Is it best to not try unless encountering a serious functional problem?

Yes.  I have replaced a rusted split commutator in one set and cleaned the commutator in others.  Removal of the shroud requires that all station presets on the back side of the commutator be run to one end of travel.

Hello, te

Thank you for the great information. I have removed the back plate and cleaned the contacts. I also tested the motor with an ac supply at 24vac. No luck

Okay, does the tuner present more friction tuning in one direction than in the other?

Wanted to provide an update on my motor issue. I determined that the problem was caused by an issue with the contacts on the back of the motor, they were quite bent. Straightened them and the issue is much better.
