EH Scott Radio Enthusiasts

The Fine Things are Always Hand Made

Hi everyone!

Well, I finished a couple other sets, and it's time to start on my AC 10. But, I have a few questions for the experts!

The chassis has some wiring...issues. I will need to replace most of the wire in the power supply, as the rubber is crumbling. Funny that Scott used that type of wire in the PS, but cloth covered in the main chassis.

The cords need cleaning up. But I'd like to know what is original and what is not. Is the "multiplug" original? How about the lamp in the cabinet?

I can see in their earlier designs, why they created some stunning radio cabinets.

regarding the 3rd version amp with Amperite line control tube,

Citizen's Radio Call Book article from March 1930 issue about the Scott remote control option, has a  circuit diagram of the Amperite tube version amp indicating the power transformer is designed for 80 volts AC across the primary winding.

I have been looking for a voltage regulator tube that will give the +- 80 volts, with about 1200mA current flow, but so far I have been unable to find anything. I'm thinking I may have to make due with the one that is in it for now, even though I don't trust it...

I have an early AW12 with dual speakers I plan to put in my Orleans cabinet. I think the speaker V board will fit OK on the top shelf my cabinet man installed. Interestingly my AW12 does not have any tone control but luckily sounds very good with the factory settings.

Also today I decided to dig into my AC10 I also have that was gone through a few years ago by a good repairman in Indiana who I think Dave knows. I had trouble with the AC10 playing so it sat for a few years. Well today I threw a 20 foot antenna on it, plugged it into a 105V stepdown transformer from Bill Liers and fiddled with the controls. Turns out I had a dirty or scratchy volume control and voila the radio came to life with huge clear sound from that little speaker. I can hear it here in my office 80 feet from it in my bedroom. I was getting ready to start testing all the tubes but they are all OK after all.

Trust it. The worst that might happen is it will go "open" and the set will quit.

Brad, until you find a suitable  Amperite tube, you can use a Variac during restoration and testing. based on your actual AC mains, you may be able to find another solution.
