The pointer is 1) very short and 2) is bent - so that the dial lamp will cast a shadow of the meter pointer on the multicolor dial insert.
You sure it can't be adjusted to works OK?

Another request for Allwave 23 J497. These were shipped with a front panel attached. Would anyone have one of these for a 5 knob version chassis?

Update on Allwave 23 J497. I posted earlier that I have this radio working, except for the green band. Checking revealed that the oscillator didn’t work on that band. Checking the coils for this band showed that one of the coils was ‘open’, but wiring was not original. Figured out that a winding had been added and connections miss wired. Restored original wiring, the plate coil is good, removed the added winding, and reassembled the coil wheel. Green band now works. This chassis was seriously messed with by a previous owner, and challenge to restore, but I think it was worth the effort. It seems this chassis is an inbetween the early 5 knob and the later 7 knob as it has the later twin antenna posts, but is a 5 knob version.

Also - on a related matter,
The low end of the green SW band could go into parasitic oscillation on the 5 knob AW-23 model and also cause the voltage regulator tubes to go dark.
There is a Scott designed modification to remedy the problem.
Maybe Kent can add it to the Scott Archive set folder for the AW-23. Maybe yours has already been modified or maybe someone lacking the work around did the mischief you have.
After seeing this and rechecking the green band, it does kill the regulators at the low end. I found the mods David mentioned, and tried it, with no success. It recommends soldering the lug directly to the chassis. My thought would be to drill a hole and use a screw and lockwasher to provide a better ground. Not sure if there is enough clearance on top to do this. My other Allwave 23 K486 does not have this exact problem, but does go into oscillation at several points on this band. K 486 does not have the filament bypass caps.

If not already done, the machine screws fastening the solder lugs to the tuner stators must be loosened and re-tightened before looking elsewhere.

Hi all: I had my Allwave 23 sr#k486 on this afternoon. Sound just quit and the regulators went dark. Replaced the oscillator tube with no results. Regulators came back on, but no response. Finger test shows that all other circuits are working. Original osc tube is good, as it checks out in J 497 chassis. So, I guess it is time to pull the chassis and do the service I have put off for years.

Update on K 486 Allwave 23
I had the radio on yesterday when the sound simply quit. Using the “ finger test” on the grids of the RF and mixer tubes provided noise thru speaker. At the same time, the regulators went dark. Indicated that the oscillator tube quit. Replacing it did not fix it. Oscillator tube checks good in J 497 chassis. replacing Rf and mixer tubes with known good tubes also made no difference. Built an extension cable for osc tube. Voltage checks seem good. Seems that the oscillator simply quit, all bands affected. I have resisted pulling this chassis, amp and speaker, but now it looks like I need to. I have done a complete rebuild on J 497 chassis and it seems to work well. Guess I will do the same for K 486. Also for Kent,, when I first posted about K 486 in 2011, I mistakenly listed the serial no. as K480.
