The Fine Things are Always Hand Made
Hello everyone, I acquired a Scott AW23 a few weeks ago and got done restoring the tuner & power unit---the serial # is S-595 and came with the original manual and a letter the previous owner wrote to H.H. Scott trying to get service for the radio even though the two companies weren't related. The main speaker & tweeters all work and the radio is very sensitive on all bands. The cabinet looks like it was revarnished which I'll have to strip off and refinish and there is some tearing of the main speaker cloth. I had to replace the rectifier tubes on the power unit as someone made adapters to use 5U4GB tubes so I got Sylvania 5Z3 & 83V tubes to replace them and they match the 4 Sylvania 2A3 tubes in the audio output section. Nice condition. Glad you returned to the proper rectifier tubes. Tweeters are a bonus.
You have the later version AW-23 commonly referred to as the 7 knob set.
Your cabinet is the WESTMINSTER, a nice design, new $30. (Less ofter seen than the WARRINGTON $25 as per the Christmas 1935 price list.
Congrats on a great find. You have the 7 knob version, apparently just before the conversion to the twin antenna posts. I have the 5 knob version in the Waverly cabinet. Mine came with the antenna adaptor mounted to the center IF can. I also have another chassis that has the provision for the double doublet antenna with 2 antenna posts, but it has been severely modified and will take a lot of time to restore.
Mine is also minus the tweeters, but I do have a pair of later jensen non electro magnet tweeters that I can add.
Again, a great find in excellent condition
Thom
Thanks David & Thom, I do have the antenna adaptor with the toggle switch but haven't connected it to the radio yet. It is loud and sounds great. I replaced all the crumbling rubber wiring on the top of the chassis with reproduction cloth wire which I use on all my restorations. I'll probably wait till next month when it starts to get cooler & less humid to strip and refinish the cabinet and look for replacement grille cloth but I heard that pattern that is in my cabinet isn't available---the cloth on the sides is in excellent condition. I also have a Scott 800B but need a cabinet and speaker for it. Ken
Hang onto the Octal -> four pin adapters that someone made to use 5U4 rectifiers. Per the RCA tube manual RC-14, the octal base 5V4 (5 Victor 4) rectifier is "electrically identical" with the 83V. Verify that the pin-out in the adapter is correct before attempting to use it, but if it is made properly you can use the adapter to substitute a 5V4 rectifier if needed for the 83V. I am doing so now on my AW23, as I have found the 5V4 to be less expensive and more plentiful (at least locally anyway) than the 83V.
Best regards-
