Info needed on Radio

Hello all-

I was cleaning out my in-laws garage and came across a Scott Radio that had been sitting for years and years in their garage.  From what I have been able to find online- it looks like an Allwave 23- 5 knob, probably about 1935.  The cabinet definitely needs some work and refinishing, its not warped or split just scratched up and dirty.   All the interior parts are still inside, all the vacuum tubes, speaker etc.  Its missing 2 knobs on the front but the plastic strip showing the station is intact.  I can add some pics if that would help, but my father in law wanted it to go to the dump and I thought I'd do some checking around first to see if has any value.   Can anyone please advise me about the collectability of this radio? Or if there is a market for it?  Even if someone wanted it for parts I'd rather see someone use it than dump it.  Thank you-

Definitely do not let it go to the dump! The chassis/amp/speaker alone are worth several hundred dollars. The value of the cabinet will depend on which one it is....there are many cabinets that were sold for the AW23. A picture would be the best way to identify the cabinet. Also....are there 3 speakers in the set or just one? Sets with the 3 speaker system are more valuable too. You have a set here that is worth somewhere between $300 and perhaps more than $1000....

 

I would expect that one of the members of this group might be near you to help identify the set too....where is the set located? Please keep us posted and try to keep the in-laws from tossing it.

here is a picture of the radio- I am located in Utah in the Provo area.  I am in possession of the radio now so it wont go to the dump. I am keeping it for safe keeping. Any info is greatly appreciated. I would be willing to sell it for any reasonable offer as well- I have no attachment to it.  Thanks

Looks like Tasman cabinet. Bad news: power supply with audio amplifier is missing. Should be next to the speaker below.  Have another look in the garage were you found the radio - may be it is still somewere around?

Leonid is correct, it is  missing the power supply/amplifier, but that can be located. It is in a Tasman cabinet...I am not sure if anyone in the forum is in Utah....gentlemen...someone needs to save this set...

This is all there was in the garage, it has sat in there for at least 25 years so any other pieces could have gone missing long ago.  Ill have to check the serial number when I get home this afternoon.  Is the Tasman cabinet common?  Thanks

Tasman is rather common, IMHO, if you can say "common" about very much sought after Scott radios... I think mostly used with early radios - e.g. you can not find it in Scott News of 1938.

So where would someone even begin to market an item like this? I would like to sell it to someone that appreciates it more than me.  Is 100- 200 dollars reasonable to ask in its present condition? I wouldnt want to cheat someone.

At those prices, the only one you may be cheating is yourself.  A real bargain price would be $500.00.  You should probably research recent sales and ask even more.  The speaker alone has been known to sell for more.  Shipping is usually the responsibility of the buyer.  Some shipping companies such as Plycon Global will pick up the console at your door and deliver it across the country to the buyers door for around $300.00.  For $200.00 I would consider driving out from California to buy it for parts!
